Your seed phrase (also called recovery phrase or mnemonic) is the master key to your cryptocurrency wallet. Anyone who has your seed phrase has complete access to your funds. Protecting it properly is the single most important aspect of cryptocurrency security.

• Text files: Documents on your computer are vulnerable to malware and theft
• Email: Email accounts get hacked; your seed phrase would be exposed

• Password managers: Better than plaintext, but still a digital target
• Nowhere: Relying on memory is risky; you could forget or become incapacitated

Recommended Storage Methods

• Paper: Write clearly on quality paper. Store in a waterproof, fireproof container. Simple and effective
• Metal: Stamp or engrave on stainless steel plates. Survives fire, water, and physical damage. Products like Cryptosteel or Billfodl are purpose-built
• Multiple locations: Store copies in different secure locations (home safe, bank safe deposit box, trusted family member)
• Split storage: Divide the phrase into parts stored in different locations (more complex but more secure against single-point theft)

Additional Security Measures

• Add a passphrase (25th word) for an extra layer of security that is not stored with the seed phrase
• Use a multi-signature setup where multiple seed phrases are needed to access funds
• Never enter your seed phrase on any website
• Verify seed phrase backup works by restoring on a separate device before sending significant funds
• Have a plan for inheritance: ensure trusted heirs can access your crypto if needed
